the going gets weird in oaxaca

(this photo has nothing to do with the rest of the post but i will say what it is at the end of the usual rambling text...)

when we arrived at the restaurant tonight - the one we had a reservation at - and to our surprise, we could no longer have dinner there. they were closed for a private function.
a wedding.
wtf?
and to make things better, they - the restaurant - had made reservations for us at another restaurant, that they assured us, was as good and had a menu that was extensive. blah, blah, blah...it was, in fact, their other restaurant, same name, different location. so off we went to the 'other' casa oaxaca - three blocks away. but when we got there, the doors were locked. as we were trying to figure out if we had to try another door, a guy came to the door and after a few seconds, let us in and we were on our way to a table...wicked.
now, i could go into the whole deal but, suffice to say...it sucked. and not that food was terrible, it just wasn't the food you'd expect at a place that has been regarded, by many, to be the best restaurant in town...the waiter was terrible, the busboy unclear when to clear plates and when to just stay the fuck away, dry meat, very limited/small menu, etc...
it was a bummer. and as the last meal i am going to have with richard for a while - i have to go to california or they have to come to vancouver - i was bummed. period.
so.
after paying our bill - during which time the waiter just stood at the table waiting (too closely) - we left. but not before stealing the menu. and then, once outside, making our way back over to the 'original' casa oaxaca while having thoughts of crashing the wedding and eating their desserts - something we didn't bother having at the 'other' casa oaxaca. once there we spoke with the head dude and told him that the 'other' was but a pale imitation of the 'original' that the menu had half the great food they did and....he offered us dessert and drinks. right now. we accepted.
and what a couple of desserts they were. and a few nice drinks...we didn't want booze but i got the impression we could have had anything we wanted...and then, after we finished, as we were leaving and thanking him for being so great, one of the waiters asked me if i had tried some of the food they were having that night for the wedding crew...i said no. would you like to? he asked. sure. yes, i would. and sooner than you could say, 'super high quality ingredients inside a hand made tortilla with all the fixins'...we had a takeout container full of grub to take home..
now that's service.
patty and i are going to go there monday night for the full deal so i can see how they really serve up the jingus.
so all's well that ends well.
richard is on his way home for a few days. i may go to some ruins near mitla today after a snack at the organic market...and pattie will, i assume, relax and read and just chill out.
pretty good saturday.

so before the photos...the picture at the top of the page is a piece by a mexican artist whose name escapes me - but i will find out for you in due order...his pieces are like collages but all are drawn to look, somewhat, like he tore them out of magazines and pasted them onto the canvas. very time consuming work and i'm sure not for everyone but i was really struck by them. i have some close-up shots of them if anyone wants to see them...and they're pricey...so i won't be bringing any of them home. the biggest piece, say 4' x 5', is being offered up at 14K USD....

on to the pics...

our dessert at the real casa oaxaca.

richard's fish at the 'other' casa oaxaca.

my mole with turkey...

pattie's avocado soup. she also had the mole with turkey.
