sunday...must be wyoming...
my day actually started off in dillon, home of...well, nothing...and me getting back on the 15 and heading south. now, heading south would generally mean less snow, not today. today it meant more snow. and then even more snow. and while there was a moment, just a moment, when i thought i'd maybe have to make a phone call to julie and zach and give them the bad news, that i had had to turn around, it all went away just as fast as the roads became clear and i was able to drive at speed once again.
so today was south down through montana, into idaho and then left into wyoming.
wilson, where i am now, is right next to jackson - the big ski hill known as jackson hole is here. it's also home to like likes of harrison ford. and, my pals julie and zach whom i met in mexico last year (two people i knew i had to come and see if i was ever heading across the country. they were a highlight, along with bill from wisconsin, of my time in mexico.) so at around noon today i made it to wilson and to zach and julie's. and what a place. perched high above wilson it looks over the valley with the town of jackson to the east. amazing. (i will post some pics of the home tomorrow.)
after some lunch we went out for a drive around wilson and then for a walk along the snake river. the landscape is amazing. and i may not have seen so much snow. maybe ever. well, ok, i did live in northern b.c. for a while so....but this really is god's country.
when we got back to the house i noticed that they had a painting by a woman who's last name was and is stofer. and i found out that she's married to a good friend of theirs name mike dennis and he lives on denman island. i asked if she had a brother names scott. turns out she does. scott is a friend of mine, i told them, who i work with in vancouver. he lives near my dad's in victoria. small world. some people i met in mexico last year, are good friend's with a friend of mine's sister. neat.
we went to the stagecoach bar tonight because every sunday they have a band there and they know one of the guys in the band. bill briggs. bill briggs is kinda famous for being the father of extreme skiing. he's in his seventies now but has played banjo in this bar every sunday for 30 years or more. it was awesome. a bunch of people go to this bar on sundays just to see this band and dance. and it's old school. guys ask women to dance and then at the end say thanks and go back to their table. and then the next song they do it again. no picking people up, no fighting, no drunks. just people being very civilized. and dancing.
julie made us a great dinner and now it's quiet time. tomorrow after coffee i'll be heading due north and towards toronto....
i'm very happy i came to see zach and julie. so great.
