last week i made mention of my pal jeff but never gave any details as something else got in the way...jeff and i used to work together at cbc many moons ago and he was the technician of most of the shows i did. he was the main man behind the controls for nightlines with my radio mentor david wisdom - no better radio man in canada as far as i'm concerned....jeff 'the hammer', 'the hitman' henschel....he's left cbc as well and become a man on the move...he's now doing sound for documentary films mainly and travels all over the world working....he's lookin' good and always has a smile on his face....another one of the good ones. check out his site...it was great to see him as i haven't in a long time...i'm hoping he and i can convince david to have dinner one night. we had made plans previously to have a meal together but i fucked it up by forgetting what day it was...i'm hoping for another chance...
this week i also had a coffee with my pal chris dafoe, another long time friend i hadn't seen in person in a very long time...chris was one of the first people i ever met when i first started at citr radio back around 1982. one of the first times i remember meeting chris he was spinning records - remember those? - downstairs at the pit pub at ubc. mark mushet introduced us and it was then that i realized being a dj meant no dress code. and i could smoke while working...nice. chris worked in the world of newspaper reporting for a long time - toronto star, globe and mail, etc...but decided after they wanted him to move to toronto a few years ago that he'd go back to school...brave. and now he's a lawyer....good work. he's a smart guy so it's not surprising he made that move and has made a real go of it....it was great to see him as well...he's high on the list of people i respect a great deal and one who, at a time that i needed guidance in the real world, gave me some..a lot. he and people like steve robertson, mark mushet and leora kornfeld, helped make me a better person during those days at citr. most of it was learning over drinks, but that was ok.
tonight was a birthday dinner of sorts with marcy at jules on abbott st. here in the hood...we're both not big on the birthday thing but decided a few weeks ago we'd go out for dinner around the time of both our birthdays....we both had the steak special...steak! nice salad, sauce covered steaks and a desert that i'll pay for later....it was good...good to see marcy, good to eat a little meat...
after dinner i went out and looked at a couple lawns that people have made inqueries about me cutting...one at a community centre - nice and easy if i get it, and one that's super overgrown crazy...more as these develop....
