i left phoenix last night and headed towards LA. it's not a long drive and a pretty straight shot overall. i had enjoyed my time in the high desert but i had to get the hell outta there...it was great to see spike, again, meet daniel and see some games. i stopped at a rest area just outside LA and had a pretty good nap-not before being hounded by some rest stop rat looking for a little action of some sort-when it was clear i was biting he left me alone.
i woke up and headed into town and that's where it all kinda went south. the fog was very heav and i knew from expeience that the only place i had left to get a shower was a travelamerica in east ontario...but because of the fog i missed the xit and went many miles too far before i figured it out-so back i went. i almost missed it on the way bac as well..this truck stop is very weird...there's always completly dented and fucked-up cars there and people roaming the parking lot. today some young woman with money seemingly pinned to her shirt waved her finger at me in some sort of disapproving way and some other dude just sat in his car staring stright forward the entire time i was there..that and the shower barely worked and the tap on the sink had no screen so it just sprayed everywhere. nice.
i then decided to head to santa ana to try and find a store i had bought some hockey equipment off on the internet. they baosted a huge showroom with tons of gear, etc..well, long story short (and several phone calls to mishi for directions from her end....0 it was a shitty no better than any other hockey store in vancouver store....i walked in...two minutes later walked out. but it took me over an hour to find...i was outta there and back on the 405 towards santa monica.
i had contacted a guy i only really know from the kid robot board and asked him if he wanted to get lunch or a coffee. he lives in santa monica and has been a kaws collector for a few years and in fact is considered one of the top three or four kaws collectors in the world. he has original canvas' by kaws, toys, etc. i was unable to see his collection today but we had a great time hanging out and saw some amazing art at some galleries. one gallery we went to was one he had recently bought a new kaws pencil drawing at and it was still on the wall there. the gallery was in culver city near the black market gallery that dave kinsey runs. also in the show were two barry mcgee pieces that were amazing. $7500.00 each-i won't be buying them. the art show ws/is a benefit for a local graffiti artist who has ALS and is in his final days so the artists all donated works.
we then went to see a joe ledbetter show and off for some bbq...ronnie is a very interesting guy and i'm glad i made the trek to LA to see him. i like him and hope to meet up with him again.
a couple of times when we were driving around i smelled something terrible and knew that something has gone all wrong in my car. i told him i was sorry but he, politely, said he couldn't smell anything...i could. it was like a cat ate a rat, then got ate by a dog, that then got ate by a huge fat guy who then died while shitting his pants and his pockets were filled with rotthen cheese...ok, well, maybe not that bad...but bad.
after leaving LA and ronnie, i headed north and couldn't take it anymore. so i pulled into a parking lot, an in-n-out burger parking lot and had a little look-see...turns out my milk in my cooler took a tumble and opened up in the cooler and the cooler drain somehow came open and leaked all over the back area of the elephant. it saoked my furniture balnket, part of my main blanket and went down into the spare tire area...mix that with some hot weather...so i had a little clean-up and am now in santa barbara doing some laundry...there was no way i could sleep with that going on...
i'm in the dryer now...more later...
if the spelling is bad today i don't care...
and a huge thank-you to ronnie pirovino for saving the day. if you want to check out some of his collection check out:
