beans for beantown....

while a late entry i felt i should include this if for no other reason than my pal brian needs to know i was on his side. brian's a big boston red sox fan and, i'm sure, is more than a little bummed by the results of the game the other night.
during game five of the ALCS, boston/tampa bay, when the sox were losing 7-0, i was hungry and ate a cold can of baked beans while i watched the game. and by the end of it all the sox had come back from near death and won the game in the ninth 8-7. remarkable. during game six the sox had a good start but then were tied 1-1 in second inning, i then pulled out the beans, cold of course, and ate them, the final result? 4-2 boston. so there we were during game seven and the sox had the lead but then, the rays went ahead and i was forced to bring out the beans once again...the difference this time was that i had already had two bowls of fantastic pasta made by mishi and wasn't really looking to eat anything else, for a while. but at the urging of mishi, garbs and he who can not be named on the blog, i opened the can and went at it.

it was hard but i did manage to finish the beans by the middle of the ninth but it was too little too late...i did what i could to help, but it wasn't enough. sorry brian.
and so it is now the rays will meet the phillies tomorrow and start the world series that not many are interested in...
we'll be thinking of you brian.

say hey! do it for charlie's mom....

the world series that everyone wanted has been replaced by the world series no one wanted...that's a garbs quote....and he's right. dodgers/red sox would have been wicked. phillies/rays - not so much. sure, i like the phillies as teams go. lenny used to play for them, philly cheese steaks are great, ryan howard, etc. and now there's another reason to cheer for the phillies. charlie's mom. win it for charlie's mom. phillies manager charlie manuel's mom died earlier this month just as he was about to lead his team into game two of the NLCS.
more details here.
so...i'm voting phillies my friends. you do what you do. and really, can you cheer for a team, the rays, that plays indoors? come on. don't be a retard.

the light at the end of the tunnel....

somehow it al got finished on time and tonight we - me, mishi and garbs - drove out to richmond and had a look as the grand opening party was going on. it was a nice turnout being that it is richmond and some folks don't like crossing the bridge...it was cool to see all the shelves with toys and clothes on them, and the lights in the platform working and the stevie janz welded clothes hangers and chromed and loking good with t-shirts hanging off of them. pretty cool.
below are some pics i took and mishi's much better pics...hers look great...mine, not so much. i have to say, i'm glad that job is over. now i await ricardo's reaction to my, slightly, over budget bill....

have fun.

mishi got some great shots....

i can fix it...oh fuck it....

more wicked action today...and i have to say i have held my cool pretty well the last 24 hours despite the setbacks. today i was cutting and after i cut a lawn at 16th and victoria - a lawn that i wrote a letter to the owner explaining i'm not really into the dog shit but it never seems to go away....or get better - anyhow, after cutting there i used her hose to wash the dog crap off the wheels and some must have gotten into the carb - water not shit - and when i got to the next lawn it wouldn't start. ok, no biggie, but as i gave it one last pull to get it going, the cord snapped and that was that. well, usually that's not that and i can repair it by taking the recoil off and rethreading the cord and away i go. done it, can do it. well, with the new fangled craftsman/briggs and straton, you can't. you have to remove the gas tank, the top metal housing, etc...before you even get near the recoil. wicked. so there i was with a lawn 3/4's cut and not able to start the mower again. so off to champion on fraser street to get it fixed...well, what are ya gonna do?....go get a burger while he fixes it is one thing...so i did. and after an hour i was back in business and cutting like a guy who likes to cut grass..or something.
then after a run at the dog lawn it was back to headquarter to put the finishing touches on the wood platform and get the hell outta there...which i did, but i will be abck there a little later tonight as it's the grand opening tonight and somehow, despite a few bad odds, i was able to get everything done in time and well, not really on budget but not bad...we'll see how ricardo reacts when i give him the bill...
a few more lawns were cut and then it was time to buy some groceries so that i can actually eat something that's good for me...and now, i will...and watch the rays/red sox game. go sox.

more as it develops.

i had the strangest dream....

there was some crazy shit going on in my head last night...out in the desert with the garbs, crazy animals with cartoon like heads and a strange texas/desert town...weird people and some other crap i'm still making heads and tails of...
ok...so pretty neat being up at 6:30 am on a saturday.

i'm off to get shit done.

have a great saturday.

a little more, a little more...shit...

the best part of today was the driving back and forth to richmond to headquarter...no, no, it was driving around town getting shit - like the big glass cash desk for headquarter and stuff at home depot - or maybe the sandwich at bosa - actually that was good...me and the garbs, like old tiles, hossing down some grub at the old bosa...nice...no, the best part was when i was tightenng the bolts for the legs on the headquarter cash desk and then, just one turn too many and...crack! yup, there it was, a nice four inch crack on the back corner..just a little too tight. shitty it was all going pretty well today.. until then.
the garbs and i had gotten the cash deck there ok...hanging out the end of the element, got the lights working in the platform, mishi pulled a fast one and got a pal of hers to cut me some plexiglass discs that were suppose to be made by someone else but that didn't happen...we cancelled the wood top and platform and replaced it with glass and had delivered today and me cutting some aluminum and drilling and tapping and polishing them at the BOC for the new legs for the cash desk...it went pretty well....
well, in the end it- the cash desk - stands fine and probably will for a long time...but it has a little custom bit now...if it does fall down or fail somehow, i'll be buying a new desk for headquarter...that would be excellent. i'd love that.
i need to get back on track in the eating dept. i have been eating like a freak the last week or so. i'll eat anything and any time...the other night i ate two bowls of cereal - cheerios - some toast and a can of beans - cold from the can - a little later on...and that was dinner. what the fuck? i had a big mac and a fillet-o-fish today....huh? on set i had some great veggies and such, but then ate a bunch of cheese...am i fucked? the garbs and i had a pretty good bbq meal the other night that included leeks, onions and mashed potatoes and nice chicken, etc...so why do i the nexy day eat like an idiot? i like the annie's organic pasta stuff, but not twice in one week...ok...i'm getting back on the good food train - sure a little crap is ok...but i have to get back to a little, not a steady diet of it...
ok..
i need to have a little relax and get ready for bed...lawns tomorrow, rain or shine....

better and better all the time...

i don't have much of a report but thought i should check-in anyways...the last couple of days i have been working on set and on the prep crew on the big show...exciting stuff....i've also been seeing a new fancy chiropractor who hasn't given me any false hope but has told me he's gonna do the best he can and we're on a seven week plan right now...and then we'll see where we're at. that's kinda exciting...more bone cracking tomorrow.
there's been some bummer action in the last few days but i'm not going to dwell on it or really mention it here....no sense to. things go up and down and that's that..check the gate - moving on.
the lawns, while basically done, still need a little action but the rain ain't helping. i think saturday'll be a big lawn day...and it may be just where i'm at today but, the desire to cut grass has kinda left me...i'm hoping it comes back soon...or by late april at least.
there's also headquarter work to be done and another some job my pal cam sent my way. next week sees me return to the pacificwest world of spfx working for tony and company. that should be interesting. could be a good change or...

ok...i need to get out of here.

somedays i tell ya, some days.

a turkey toast to italo and the little fella

ya just never know.
ang had asked me the other day if i could drive her to point roberts to get something she had ordered and had had shipped there...sure, no problema. issy had decided to not do the big thanksgiving feast this year but since we were gonna be out there anyways, we'd drop-in and say hi...i gave larry a jumpstart and a quick rinse and let him run for a while to charge the battery and get the juices running. good for him. we had some tea with issy, she told us a few stories and then we were on our way back to town...it was good to see issy, as usual. she's a winner.
ang and i were gonna have thanksgiving dinner together but hadn't decided where as we headed back to town...mishi and the garbs were going to her cousin's place in kits and had told us we should just come there...i've had a lot of dinners with her extended family so why not one more...? i asked ang if she was into that and as i got a yes, we were on our way...and really, it was the right move. we had a great time...i think ang had a very, very good time...and ate like a champ.
when we were having our dinner and they did their traditional italian toast i have to admit i got a little choked-up. mishi's dad and her uncle italo used to do the toast, over and over, and while i'm not a big family dinner guy, i loved those guys...and i miss them when i'm in that situation. mishi's dad was so great, so fuckin' great as was italo...dinners with that family are different without them there.
debbie, mishi's cousin, is a real go-getter and loves to have family and friends around at all times...and it shows...a huge thanks to her for inviting us to her place and making us feel so welcome...the house was full of people and the food was great....i need a nap now...
tomorrow morning i get some sort of back scan at the new chiropractor guy i have now...i'm not sure what the deal is but, i'm hoping it does something or gives him an idea of what to do next...and then it's off to set on the big show for more rain making....

have a great tuesday....

worried

i'm a little worried. worried i won't be able to make it. i can be a bit of a worrier or a guy who over-thinks things but i don't think that's what i'm doing now, i have some serious concerns. i don't think i'm gonna be able to finish the menu at topanga. last night corie and i went there and i had a meal i was almost unable to finish. i know i'm a big fella but i don't eat huge meals and this is hard...i'm not sure, and like i said i'm worried - and maybe even scared - that i'll never finish the two burrito dinner. never.
in other news...
the russian e.mailed me and asked me for one last cut at her estate in burnaby...and it is like an estate. she lives in this little neighbourhood tucked away on the burnaby-new west border that has these huge homes with long stone driveways. a little river runs behind her place and separates her place from an even bigger house behind her. yesterday as i was getting started, i was doing the trimmer edging and working my way around the house, with my head down paying attention, when all of a sudden i felt eyes on me. i looked up and there were three people staring at me. i'm assuming it was her kid and his girlfriend and another guy. at first they seemed kinda confused as to what i was doing there but when i asked them if i should stop - because they were having drinks out on the deck in big glasses like it was august - they said no keep going...and then watched me for the rest of the time cutting the grass. and sometimes they spoke in english, but when i was close to them, they switched to russian. i felt like i was at the sopranos place doing the lawn. when i was finished i just split and will figure out the payment later...she's good about that stuff.
in long distance news...
i had a call from my man marc belke from up in the hinterland yesterday...i love that guy and was actually about to send off a long e.mail to him since we hadn't spoken in a while...but now it has all been said in the call yesterday. more expensive, sure, but nice to hear his voice. he's enjoying his time in smithers but it is not without its problems and concerns. love gets tested for sure, life moves along at a slower pace than in the big city, great intospection. i miss him on the ice when we're playing bomber hockey to be sure and one day, maybe he'll make a guest appearance old mittens will.
i finally got my hair cut yesterday, not that it's really noteworthy but sometimes it's so great getting rid of a bunch of that bulk...short for spring. afterwards mishi and i hooked up and went to get her birthday cake up on 16th ave - some fancy pants bakery. she and the garbs were gonna be going to his mom's for thanksgiving/mishi's birthday dinner...issy's not having a thanksgiving dinner this year so no turkey for me this year...well, i may get some turkey - if i feel like getting some but it'll be at a restaurant or capers or whole foods i guess...which is fine...and i have been invited for thanksgiving dinner elsewhere but am not going due to...well, i'm just not. it's all good. i'm actually looking into whether or not denny's has a thanksgiving dinner, i've been there before for birthdays and, i think, xmas but can't remember if they have a turkey hoedown.
ok..bomber hockey in a couple hours so i should get ready for that...relax, eat, get my gear together...it takes time.

have a great sunday.

i'll see mishi a little later on today when we go and get her cake and actually wish her a happy birthday in person....

makin' smoke and eating ribs....

wow, 4:45 came early and fast this morning...and i just got home, well, 1/2 and hour ago...and despite eating ribs at around 7 pm i feel like having some cereal.
it was a long day but i get to sleep-in tomorrow until 6:30 because i don't have to start until 7:30 am..
one of my co-workers said something great today as he made his way through his plate of ribs..., "i sure hope we wrap soon, because i can't eat another thing.." i then went and got my self a plate of ribs and while eating them also tried to run my smoker at the same time enlisting this comment, "garn, put the ribs down and lick your fingers because they may catch fire with all the grease on them...." they could i guess.
ok...
i need to get to bed...

love you

in other news....

our gal k-win had a bit of a rough day today getting smacked by another driver as she was driving near her place in the west end...some dude came out of an alley without stopping, as she was just getting going, and smoked her sending her into a full demo derby 360. luckily she's all good but is feeling some stiffness in her neck and is gonna take a week off to let it all get better - there goes my haircut tomorrow....damn that guy wrecking the world's greatest hair chopper...take care kid...i'll either shave my head or get morgan to fix me up...

happy birthday ang!

holy cow!...i missed her birthday! but today, after cutting a couple lawns, i enlisted the help of my pals at the flower factory and ...wham! nice set of flowers for our gal ang who turned 29 yesterday. good lord she doesn't look a day over 28...i hope you had a nice day yesterday...next prawn taco salad is on me...

walkin', ridin', drivin'

i walked over to meet megan for lunch yeterday in kits and that was just lovely. nice walk, ran into andrew s. along the way and had a good talk with him as we walked together. after lunch i walked down to the new chiro guy, which happened to be right next to topanga cafe and was expecting to just fill out a few forms, and set-up a time to come in later, nope, they had a cancelation and i could, if i wanted, come back at 3:15...but on the way to lunch i had gotten a call from a guy i know who needed his lawn cut and i was worried about the rain etc...so i said yes to the appointment and then hopped the bus to get back home and get my car and gear...and then basically drive right back to kits, have my deal and then go cut grass...i should have just driven in the first place - although i didn't know about the appointment and it was a great walk...ok...
so, this new chio guy...i think he's thinking the same things as the others but he has a lot more fancy language to make it all make sense, that i'm fucked. he gives you both sides of the coin. he told me we'd go at things in a systematic fashion, see what's what and that would be that. i am going back tuesday for some kind of fancy back exam with some sort of fancy machine and then he'll know more. he's seen the ct scan and likes having that. he did say there could be improvement since i have, already, had some, but that it may not be great improvement. he also gave me the lowdown on surgery. that truthfully, a surgeon could go in there and try and fix the problem but that, and this kinda made me freak a little, it could, because the problem is so close to the spinal column, paralyze me or even....um...kill me. so...there ya go. good times.
i am continuing on and we'll see what happens. i am waiting to hear back from the pilates studio on when i can get my one on one consult...megan does work there with the same woman i will be seeing and was gonna put in a good word for me...thanks megan.
after cutting clay's lawn i met0up with marcy and we went and had a snack at me and julio's over on commercial drive...ricardo from headquarter says it's not very good but i still like it...some good grub there.
ok..i have shit to do and lawns to cut...bad back or no bad back.

rock on.

a new set of hands...

the other day when i was out cutting the dog lawn, rob, the husband of dr. yvonne, came by and we were talking about nothing but he asked me about my back and how it was...i told him it was better, kind of, but still hurt and that i was gonna try pilates and was still doing the home traction once in while...he said he had a great chiropractor and had i tried bone crackers...i told him i had been sent away from my bone cracker until i/we - me and the doctors, figured ut what the deal was with my back. and as we know, my new doctor, has said i am unfixable, which has to be bullshit, or at least not completely true...anyhow, rob told me about his guy in kits who is, apparently great and who has, in the past, helped some of his pals with their problems...so...i'm gonna go today, after i have lunch with megan, and see him since he's just up from megan's office on west fourth.
rob was also saying how he had seen a doctor on charlie rose who had a bum hand. and he had gone all over the world - because he could because he was a big deal hisownself, and could afford to - and seem doctor after doctor about his hand. and how he had gotten a different answer from every doctor. he, rob, also said that this doctor had done a study that determined that almost every doctor, in every sector, starts making an assessment within 20 or so seconds of meeting you. if you come in and say, "i have an ache in my leg", they start in on a path based on other people who have come in and said the same thing, and then if you add that it has been there for three days after you went running, they close in on a diagnosis they've made before based on that info. and how not enough doctors actually listen to the whole problem before they start thinking about what may be wrong, that everyone is different. anyhow... (did that make any sense...?) no one knew what the problem was, for sure, but they had an idea. but it wasn't until he met with one young doctor who straight out said, "i don't know what's wrong wth your hand" he felt it was refreshing that someone would say they didn't know. (i think in the end they figured out what was wrong but he was happy to have met someone who wasn't trying so hard to find the answer or had already decided the answer...) and i like that too, in a way. i'm not crazy about the answer my guy gave me, and not so much that it pertained to me, this answer, but that he was so certain, that there was nothing that could be done, that i should stop all treatments and just live with it. if, after more home traction, more chiro, and some pilates, it's still fucked, ok, i give, but for now, no way, i'm not stopping. and playing hockey seems to actually help a little, keeps my back moving and fluid. i don't think i can play games back to back, so to speak, but one or two a week if they're spaced out, that'll be fine.
ok...i'm out here...i think, because walking seems to be a good back thing, i'll walk to kits to meet up with megan...see ya later...

one last enchilada

chris is heading off to england/europe to visit his parents and needed one last enchilada...so off to topanga we went. he had a good time with us the first time he went, so why not? i met up with them at the jj bean - chris, lyndsay and another beaner whose name i have forgotten and feel a bit like a dick because i have forgotten - on granville island and away we went. the queen and i had been in touch during the day so she came as well as senor tornack for chris' big send off. it was good...lyndsay ate more than she wanted i think and was complaining about her tight shorts. she took a lot of her meal home.
have a good time in europe chris....don't take those people too seriously.

g. xo

lyndsay...more of her stoner look.

we do the lyndsay stoner look.

lyndsay and serge.

chris and lyndsay.

lyndsay laughs while...damn, what's her name...fuck...anyhow...a few laughs were had.

mr. pilates

so i made a trip today to the diane miller pilates studio over on 16th ave. my pal lena suggested i go and give them a go, so i did today. i had to fill out a bunch of paperwork but it's the first step, and i was happy to make it. i'm gonna do a one on one session and get assessed and then we'll see where i'm at.

fingers crossed.

g. xo

costco? on a sunday...? ok.

yesterday morning things didn't look so good, weather-wise, so i had to, initially, put my lawn cutting thoughts forward a bit to later in the week trying to figure out the schedule...it's come down to the last few cuts of the season and with the rain it makes for some longer times in between cuts and then the grass is longer and...but then all of a sudden there was a hint of sunlight so i moved on it...it was good too. i managed to get three cut, two of which were their final cuts this season and one more in the west end...i was gonna try and knock off a couple today but it looks bad...
after the lawn chopping yesterday i went and had lunch with the garbs on the island and then went and grabbed ang as we were gonna hit-up costco and get some family sized items. so now i have a load of cheerios, some ritz things for the garbs when he comes to watch the baseball playoffs, and the real goodness, a huge bottle of ibupropen for 9 bucks...nice.
ok...
that's it...not much action really...there's talk of work but no one's said anything to me...so maybe i'll be working, maybe not.

have fun today.

for better or for worse

it was a bit of a rough one today....i felt rudderless. when i told mishi this she thought it had something to do with the change in the weather. i don't know if that's it but the rain can't help. it changes a lot. no lawn cutting, no hanging out drinking coffee outside, you have to close the windows on your car, etc...bummer. i find myself, on days like today, having a hard time making decisions - should i go to a movie, go home and watch the baseball playoffs, get some groceries, go and....? and it all seems like a chore....in the end i came home, after doing some banking, and just sitting, trying write some more of 'cancer show' and watching baseball while i waited for the time to come that i had to leave for my hockey game....it was ok..i had a couple of hot dogs, a little lemonade and a yam...
i also, today, did something thoughtless and uncaring and regret it as i sit here now. i'm not going to go into the details but, it was the mouth moving faster than the brain. it was fueled mainly by heartache and, perhaps, nervousness and stupid. i'm hoping for a better day tomorrow with less faux pas...and love of a different kind but as strong and important.
i also made a promise today to someone i care about a great deal.
after hockey tonight, a friend called and wasn't having the best time ever so i suggested i come and get them and we'd get a drink and talk. it was nice, a little stitch and bitch session of sorts. as we were driving home, well, their home and then i headed home, we talked about life and such and they started crying saying they hated a conversation we had had earlier in the week and how it has upset them. and i understood. it made me sad to recount the conversation we had had. we talked some more about it and us, and how we feel about each other, and how important we are to each other. and how they didn't want me to ever leave them, that i had made their life so much better.
and then the promise. a promise i made and meant and a promise i'm making to you as well. i promise that i will not try and accellerate my time here in any unnatural way. how's that for vague? i have, in the past - less so now than i have in the past - made overtures to 'checking out' early. and i have decided to work against that. i battle with this stuff and sometimes wonder if there are reasons to get up every day but, i'm gonna try and end that. one day at a time - so to speak. when i take stock, it's pretty good. or, it could be much worse for sure. and i know that right now it's a bad time to be poor - rheostatics reference - but there's gotta be something worth living for. and i have taken a couple bad hits lately that make it harder than usual - no real work in film lately, my break-up, my chronic back pain, the winter weather setting in, etc...but this all too shall pass. it will. and it'll be better. but my stock....my great friends, issy, floyd, a roof over my head, car, jobs that appear when i need them most, a little hockey, great coffee, mexican food, roadtrips, cutting lawns....how could i leave all that? i promise. i won't. not on purpose.
i know that there are a lot of people who read this blog that i don't know all that well and a lot of this will make no sense to them at all....but to those of you who i do know well, who read this on a regular basis, i just want you to know, i love you. i really do and as sandra berhard once said, without you i am nothing.
it's the truth.

thanks tobe, thanks nick, thanks garbs...

today was the day we tackled the headquarter richmond. the first part of the install of the platform and shelves i had made by the boys at momentum woodworks, just down the way from propellor on hastings....
i enlisted the garbs, tobe and nick to help me get it done. and thank god...it was a shit eater...and i - surprise! - had a mini meltodown at one point (but actually didn't throw anything or kick anything....i'm getting better...) and had to have a little liedown in the element for a bit - i just needed a rest...and the worst part was that we/i knew exactly what we were doing and wanted to do but it just wasn't working...i won't get into the details but suffice to say, once we figured out our main problem - something we all fought with - it was clear sailing and went really well...but thank god for the boys i had with me....
ricardo seems very pleased with the work and i think it looks great...or will once it's cleaned up and a few little things are done....the lights still have to be sorted out and the cash desk i'm having made - which i'm a little concerned about since when i called about it i got, "oh yeah, i forgot about that...i'll get right on it and i'll call you back...." i never got a call back. funny, i had the same phone conversation a two weeks ago....
then, after ten hours or so of fighting it out, we were done for the day and the garbs and i headed off to topanga after dropping off ricardo at headquater....and then at topanga, there he was, mr. don bull and his much better half, donna. nice folks....
i did manage to knock off three more items off the menu....i'm getting there....

more action tomorrow...or maybe not...

field trip

our gal lyndsay's back from her field trip to europe...actually, she came back earlier than she had originally intended - because she was just done with it...i understand that. it's always great to go away but sometimes, there's no place like home...i went to get a coffee today and there she was, heading outside to hack a butt. welcome home.
i had a little feild trip today as well...my second trip to ikea this week. shauna needed to get a file cabinet and i decided i would love to go to richmond and ikea again...but i'll tell you this - don't go to the richmond store unless you really need to or are near there, it's now considered somewhat of a satelite store and the coquitlam store is the main baby now. they have half the shit there. always call first...most likely richmond won't have it in stock. but coquitlam will. good times...
ok...back to the baseball playoffs...

workin' it

well, after a couple of days of cutting and painting steel on one show it was off to run a fan and make wind on another...such is the world of a guy 'day-calling' on shows...it's good. trouble was, it was a night cal..so i had been up since 7 am and then had to go to work at 6 pm...after helping zoe with her bed and ikea stuff and cleaning the house stem to stern. so i was beat....they let me split early so that was good...i was home by 3 am...and then up at 8:30 am and off to cut a bunch of lawns as it's suppose to rain tomorrow...now it won't...that's ok.

tonight is the start of the baseball playoffs..pretty exciting...go cubs...
