above: one of the short conversations i had with a fed/ex live agent this morning. he read my question and then told me no.
i bought a new thingy from apple and am having it shipped to my place - problem is, i'm not going to be there to receive it. so i thought as a preemptive strike, i'd contact fed/ex and tell them this so they didn't waste their time trying to deliver a package to a guy who isn't home. that would be me.
fed/ex has a new live chat feature that i think is pretty cool. you chat with them, tell them the problem or in my case solution and away you go. and all i asked them to do was not deliver it. not to re-route it - as apple has a strict policy about re-routing packages so i didn't ask for that (well, initially i did see if they could but was told of the policy so...and that's cool. i get it.) but what i did ask them to do was to just leave it at the fed/ex depot and i'd bring some i.d., two pieces as asked for, and i'd grab it. a bit of a hassle going to richmond but, no biggie.
nope. no can do.
so i asked again - just because i'm that kinda guy. i reiterated that just wanted to help the driver out by not wasting his time going to a place that had no one there. i told them - 'i will not be there, so it's a waste of time'. 'yes. but we are following apple's orders and attempting one delivery and then we can leave it at the depot.'
ok. so around noon today there will be a guy, with a big box, in front of my place, trying to contact me. and ta-da, i won't be there. shocker. and away it will go, back in the truck, and back to richmond - or maybe burnaby - where it should have stayed in the first place.
nice work fed/ex. thanks steve jobs.
