a typical saturday-tan tan noodles, toys and a baby shower bbq...

i'll keep this short because, really, this saturday is all about the pictures....saturday was busy-as usual. cut a few lawns, they're a little crispy from a general lack of rain but they'll be fine....saw marcy at the garden centre behind eugene choo on my way up to claim my new toys... she has really done a nice job with that offshoot of the flower factory...check it out if you get a chance...then it was off to the shum's for the brent and mina baby shower-which i found out was a bbq...huh? i had no idea....it was nice to see a lot of my friends i never see due to family, work, etc....tons of pics...then it was off for tan tan noodles..because sasha had never had them...now her life is just that much more complete...

lots of pics...less talk....

holding my breath and garbs get portlandized...maybe

this may be be coming to an apartment near you...soon...

today i waited, holding my breath-not literally, while i waited for a call from fed/ex regarding a package coming from new jersey..not for me but for the show..there had been a couple of fuck-ups...and now it was all on the line...well, they didn't call like they said they would but i jumped the gun and called them..it was in..so i bolted to richmond-the airport, and grabbed it and brought it back here-not before hitting solly's bagels on the way back first...
so it all seems fine now but we'll/i'll know for sure once friday afternoon comes and everything is installed...holding my breath some more..
had a nice visit with monica today at jj bean..she is one of the barista's there..i like her..she interesting and just a little kooky in a good way...i asked her today what she wanted to be when she grew-up...i think she's 24...she said she doesn't want to be rich but rather to be doing something creative and be self-sufficent and work very little...man, that's sounds perfect...where did i go wrong?

i found out today that Upper Playground, a hipster dufus store from san francisco is opening a store in portland-something i suspected a while back and their grand opening is the august long weekend and i was already planning to go down so..now it makes even more sense...they have an art gallery there as well as a retail clothing outlet...plus aesop rock is going to be doing some live in-store stuff...the garbs and i may head down saturday just time time for the festivities...which actually start thursday but i can't get there then, i do have to work...anyhow, the garbs will finally get a taste of the famous la bonita burrito! and a coffee at stumptown....good times...

more details as they develop

knowing when to say 'when' and the lawn boy diaries...

so last night i went at the painting again...and in rather short order, well maybe not that short, i had somthing i was pretty happy with. i stopped and sat in my chair and just looked at it...i was done. i had made something that, was maybe not great art, but somewhat satisfying. i phoned pam to get some technical advice regarding varnishes and such...then, befor ei knew it i was adding to the painting...i totally fucked it up...my basic idea is still salvageable but i have to wait for the paint i added to cover it up...i'm a dork. i should have left well enough alone. oh well...
the new order of lawn order shirts has gone is so if you are still having thoughts of ordering now is the time...or it will be too late. he has the basic order and i have made a few additions, including one pink hoodie for CC, but that's it at the moment...3-2-1...call or e.mail now or it's gonzo...
the rain has finally come and not a moment too soon..keith's lawn needs it badly as do laurie and bruna's..i'd love a little rain for a couple of days and then i can get at the cuts...
for anyone who cares...and i haven't actually spoken of this...but i may be making a small 10 minute mocumentary called 'lawn boy'. the garbs will star but the lead has yet to be determined...i will not, unless i can't find anyone else, be in it...more details as they develop but suffice to say, i have written most of the script, asked certain people to be involved and have a director..i think...she says she'll do it..it'll be super stupid, super lawn order.

have at...

call the art cops...garn's painting again....

so last night after dinner i felt somewhat inspired..no real reason but i felt like i should bring the canvas, i was painting before, down from upstairs and give it another go...there was and are already layers of acrylic paint on it as well and patches that have been sanded a few times as well...i have never professed to being an artist but decided a while ago that i needed to paint something. so i did. and it sucked. badly.
but last night i put it back up on the easel and broke out the paints and, this time, a large house paint brush...now it's a mix of acrylic and latex paints...i have no idea what it'll be in the end but i think i have decided where it's going...kind of...for now. when the network and i were in portland i picked up some old photos of people and have incorporated one of them into it...and i hate mixed media...
maybe i just got sick of seeing that canvas sitting against the wall every time i went upstairs..maybe it was the network telling me how she used to do art and wants to get back into it and show me her portfolio, or marcy e.mailing me yesterday and asking me to help her with a project she wants to do-which i am happy to help with...whatever the reason there is a canvas in my apartment that now looks a lot different than it did this time yesterday. the majority of you will never see it but that's ok...it won't be hanging in a high traffic area...
i made the blockhead dolls a couple of xmas' ago and have made my aluminum blocks with the writing on them but somehow it's not enough...marcy wants to make a book of sorts and i won't give anything away here as it's not my place to do so...but her doing that made me think of the book i started a few years ago and then abondoned due to a few factors...money was one of them-a big one, and shyness was the other...but really, why do i give a fuck!? so the book may rear it's ugly head. maybe it'll be next year's xmas present...
the aluminum chair andy helped me to design, thanks andy, may have to be built too just to get it out of my system...

ok...all systems go...

more good times at the doctor's office...

a few weeks ago i went in for an ankle x-ray...actually i was getting my chest x-rayed as well...i hurt my ankle playing hockey with kramer and it just hasn't gotten any better, in fact, it is worse than ever...so i phoned to get my results and they wouldn't give them to me over the phone...it's not like they're gonna tell me i have ankle cancer...so today at lunch i drove to kits and went through the whole ordeal one more time, and i know it won't be the last....and there was some good action there today...a young man was there waiting for something, i dunno what, and he was consumed by his ipod headphones....dangling them in front of his eyes and flicking them with his finger over and over again...transfixed...another gentleman bellowed from down the hall that he needed to use the washroom but...and then stopped talking...he later appeared in a wheel chair bringinbg himself right up to the counter and saying how he's like to get a taxi home...des' wife called him one and then asked if he's like to wait inside or outside for the taxi, "yes" he replied...ok...good times...the kid playing with the headphones was asked who the doctor was he wanted to be refered to and his reply was, "he's the doctor who has taken off all the moles of everyone in our family, i want him to take mine off too...he's done everyone in our family..." this at a far louder than needed volume...okay dude, we know..you've got a miole..more good times..
so, it turns out my ankle was never fractured - thumbs up, but that he thinks i've really tore the ligaments that keep the whole thing together...even more good times...and has now refered me to UBC sports medicine for, perhaps, an MRI or a Catscan...nice...if it takes too long i may just pay the 400 clams and get it done privately...this pain has gone on long enough...

ok..enough of that...my hair is of some concern to me..i got a very nice, as usual, haircut from k-win on saturday, but this grey hair has got me down...and not the fact that i have grey hair, that's cool, it's how it's distributing itself on my head..i look like paulie from the sopranos...a clear line of where it starts and ends...it almost looks like i dye the top part of my head only...which would be retarded...but people have asked me if i do that...fuck. all my life i've hated something about my hair and how it looks, now a new reason to wear a hat fulltime...

more details as they come to me...

lawns, art, sun decks and skate decks...

another busy weekend for old garn...friday night was the usual snacks at topanga with corie and the garbs followed by some hanging out at garbs and mishi's later on with mr. tornack...i was trying to buy cirque tickets online but it kept fucking up so i don't know if we're gonna go or not...issy went on tuesday and loved it...corie and fawn went the week before.
saturday i drove down to point roberts to mail a toy to some guy in the states and then dropped by issy's to see her new above ground pool...i guess it didn't work out so well and she sold it on craigslist...hipster issy selling shit on craigslist...
back in town i dropped by jessica's to see the damage being done there with the building of the new deck addition...matt, jessica's boyfriend, has taken on the task and i have to say, it's a scary one...i've told them i'm gonna go by every few days and take pictures to document the progress...matt says in the new couple of days it will probably look the same...go matt go!
i had to wash my car, larry, after it came back from renting it to 'masters of horror' the other day..actually, three days...i don't know where it was parked but it had a few birds near by...i may charge them for cleaning...
i went to jo's for dinner last night-she was making me dinner for helping do handyman shitola around her new place...a new place where when the trains go by all conversation has to stop...anyhow..i'm happy to help out and i got a great meal out of it...nice salad action, chicken drumstick thingys and sorbet...nice...
went and saw 'prairie home companion' last night at the fifth ave...garrison keeler, the writer of the original series on PBS, was a guy i really liked for a long time..i was a fan of many like him...guys far smarter than myself...tom snyder, randy newman, keeler, paul harvey, spaulding gray, etc...i always think of randy newman-the good old boys period, when i think of keeler..i'm not sure why, but i think they have things in common when it comes to weaving a tale or story...maybe somewhat like harry chapin too...guys i wanted, in some way, to be. i have been known to tell a story ot two...and i wanted to someday do what they did, in some way-but never ever did. sure, when i was at cbc i told a few stories on-air but the monologue was what i wanted to do..to hold the audience in the palm of your hand...grey did it to me a couple of times...it's an amazing talent...to not be self-serving or egotistical but to entertain with the simple act of storytelling...maybe i thought that was going to be the way i left my mark...something for people to remember me by...my father, i think, thought i was destined to be the next great canadian writer at one tme-never happened, probably won't...but that's ok... i think my only real regret now in my life-besides certain failed relationships, is that i failed to make that mark...(and i'm not looking for any sympathy, i'm just sayin' out loud...)
i have been lucky in my lifetime to be surrounded by extremely taleneted individuals...artists, writer's, musicians, etc...that i always wondered what my thing would be...i still don't know...people like pam and tobe who kinda do it all-paint, design, make art/furniture/lighting, corie who is a great fabricator, and artist and has made good use of both talents, mishi who has carved out a nice way for herself and who makes great jewelry, garbs who for a big man has a great knack for the delicate work he does, marc and brent who really made their mark on the punk rock scene in canada and maybe the world, marcy who has seen through a few musical projects and continues to do so, old friends like michael turner who continues to make a living from his writing...and so many others...don bull, judy radul, nick rust, nick scmidt, the network, etc...i wish i had a little of what they all had..maybe i have something else i don't know about...oh well..anyhow...moving on...we ran into corie at the movie...he had to get the hell out of there...
this morning the network and i went for breakfast before i went to cut joel's lawn..but not before i had to give the finger to a bus driver who has no idea about the zipper method of merging...and then some couple in a car next to us making smiley faces at me and then telling me at a stoplight that they were just admiring my tattoos...ok...we ended up at seb's on broadway...home of the watery coffee and wayward service...i had only been there once before and hopefully, i can wait a while again before i go there again...then it was off to cut a lawn, take zulu's records recycling to the transfer station and get a snack at solly's bagels...i was gonna help megan with her fridge(?) but it kinda got late so maybe this week sometime...then the garbs and i went to the network's to put in the lights...no rest for the wicked...then we got the hell out of there, dumped some bottles in the alley behind my place and headed to robson street, where the garbs lives...i needed some crap at london drugs so it kinda worked out...garbs bought me a coffee at artigiano and we sat on the steps on the art gallery and watched the italian dudes and dudettes drive around honking their horns...
now i'm home, cleaning my bathroom and making some kinda bean soup thing...it'll be nice to get back to work tomorrow and relax a little...

i love you all...i really do.

g. xo

they really want a deck...

the fence is next...

the kids have an alley party behind my place...

more proof soccer/football is fucked.

so let me get this right...two teams play to a draw. then, instead of playing until someone legitimately score a goal, they do a shootout? after all the time they've out in it gets settled like that? with a net that huge it basically takes someone fucking up rather than a great deal of skill to decide the game. play until someone scores. it only makes sense. and of course, everyone on commercial drive today is italian. much like st. patricks day when everone is irish regards of where they were actually born. but..whatever. it's only soccer, it just seems like a cheap way to win.

ps...as to fridays post regarding the dry cap...kimlett, who is a superstar, says she can make a wicked dry cap..thank-god someone has stepped up to the plate...and, as usual, it kim...superstar. and also in regards to the dry cap. debate, saying jenn doesn't know how is not meant as an insult...i think she's a very nice woman and i hope it wasn't taken as a slag..i love all the kids at jj bean...even that freaky english kid...

lunchtime at the five and dime...

jennifer, the queen of the universe, messaged me and asked if i wanted to go to the red burrito for lunch...why not...? i grabbed corie and we drove down and picked her up from the giant kitchen...i just made that up but really like it...genesis foods is no lobger that, it's the giant kitchen...the red burrito was, as usual, very slow and i have to say, i hope their other locations don't suffer from this type of slowness..they now have one on braodway near camibie-i have not been there, one in north vancouver-not been there either...but jeezzuss..they've got to speed it up a little...but look at me, still standing in line to get one..although i have bolted a few times when the line has been too long and it ain't movin'...
afterwards we went to jj bean for a coffee and to get rid of the queen and outside near the door of jj bean was this freaky woman who made faces at me and uttered something...i dunno...she was still there when we left and i wanted to get a picture of her but she was giving me the evil eye...she wanted to kill us...
corie has been searching all the jj bean locations for a barista who actually knows waht a dry cap. is...today's barista, jenn, does not know...the pictures prove this...still tasty but a little too much milk action...

ok..back to work now...

g. xo

hey look at me....!!!!

and the winner is...

...too much milk!!!!
